Fuel Storage Tanks
Fuel storage tanks are usually for containing and storing liquids and sometimes for compressed gasses in liquid form. This being the case they need to be able to cope with high pressure acting upon them.
Storage tanks are often cylindrical in shape, perpendicular to the ground with flat bottoms and a fixed or floating roof. Some of these fuel storage tanks can take on iconic status. For example, there is a very famous fuel storage tank outside the Oval Cricket Ground. The sight of the fuel storage tank has become synonymous with views of the The Oval itself. There is even an illustration of the England vs. Scotland football match held at The Oval in 1872 that includes the fuel storage tank in the background. There have been generations of cricket fans following the game on television who will be familiar with the sight of the fuel storage tank but have very little idea what it does or what it is for.
Some people only know that this type of fuel storage tanks has a floating roof that rises and falls depending on the amount of fuel it contains from watching the cricket on the television.
There are of course many environmental regulations applied to the design and operation of fuel storage tanks depending on what fuel they will contain and whether they are above ground fuel storage tanks or underground fuel storage tanks. Above ground fuel storage tanks, for example, often have what’s called a bunding around them. A bunding is a ditch, or dyke, around the fuel storage tank that will collect any fuel that escapes or leaks from the tank.
